Troubleshoot employee badges

Fixes for common employee badge problems: Bluetooth and camera permissions, codes that won’t scan, badges out of range, failed syncs and missing menus.

Most employee badge problems come from Bluetooth, distance or an interrupted sync. Check those first: Bluetooth is on, the Joan Workplace mobile app is allowed to use it, the badge is charged and close to your phone, and the app stays open until it finishes.

The app says Bluetooth is off or not allowed

The employee badge screens show a red banner when the app can’t use Bluetooth. You can still see your badges, but scanning, assigning and syncing are turned off until Bluetooth works again.

  • Bluetooth is off: tap the banner to open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and turn it on.
  • The app isn’t allowed to use Bluetooth: tap the banner to open the app’s permissions and allow Bluetooth.
    • On iPhone, you can only allow it again in Settings, because the app can’t ask a second time.
    • On Android, the app asks again, unless you chose “Don’t ask again”. In that case, allow it in the app’s settings.

The camera doesn’t open, or the code won’t scan

  • Allow camera access for the Joan Workplace mobile app in your phone’s settings.
  • Make sure the badge shows its start screen with the badge code. Press the button on the back to get to it.
  • Move to better light and hold the phone steady, a little further from the badge.
  • If it still won’t scan, enter the badge’s MAC address manually. It’s shown on the badge’s start screen and printed on the box.

“This badge can’t be added”

The badge is registered to another Joan organization. Ask that organization’s admin to remove it, or contact Joan support.

A badge shows as out of range

The badge is too far from your phone, or its battery is empty. Bring it close to your phone and check the battery: press and hold the button on the back for about 4 seconds. An empty badge shows a red battery icon at the bottom of the display.

Syncing stopped or a badge failed

Syncing can stop if you close the app or the badge goes out of range. When a badge fails, the app shows why and lets you retry. Bring the badge close to your phone, keep the app open and tap retry.

A badge still shows old details

Badges only update when you sync them from the app. Edit the details in MyJoan, then resync the badge from the Joan Workplace mobile app with the badge nearby.

A badge can’t be assigned because it’s used for visitors

A badge has one job at a time. Remove it from Visitor Management first, then add it as an employee badge.

I can’t see Employee badges in the app

  • Check that you have the admin or office manager role in MyJoan.
  • Update the Joan Workplace mobile app to the latest version.
  • If you still can’t see it, contact Joan support.
