## What is the Joan MCP server?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools from other applications. The Joan MCP server gives an MCP-compatible AI assistant the same Joan actions that Joan AI uses. Your employees can book a room, reserve a desk or invite a visitor in the assistant they already use. You do not need to add a second chatbot.

> [!NOTE]If you use Claude, Joan AI is also available as a ready-made connector. See [Joan AI in Claude](/help/workplace-management/joan-ai-in-claude). If you use Microsoft Teams or Slack, see [Joan AI for Microsoft Teams](/help/workplace-management/joan-ai-for-microsoft-teams) and [Using Joanbot on Slack](/help/workplace-management/joanbot-on-slack).

## Before you start

> [!IMPORTANT]Each person who connects needs their own Joan account with an active Joan user license.

You need:

- an AI assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in,
- permission to add a custom connector in that assistant (in many company accounts, only an admin can do this),
- the Joan MCP server URL: `https://mcp.getjoan.com/mcp`

## Connect your AI assistant

The exact menu names differ between assistants. The steps are the same in each.

1. Open the connector settings of your AI assistant. Look for **Connectors**, **Integrations**, **Tools** or **MCP servers**.
2. Select the option to add a custom connector or a remote MCP server.
3. Enter a name, for example `Joan`.
4. Enter the server URL `https://mcp.getjoan.com/mcp`.
5. Leave the authentication on **OAuth**. Do not enter an API key or a client secret.
6. Save the connector.
7. Select **Connect**. A Joan page opens. If you are not signed in to Joan, sign in with your Joan account.
8. On the page "Joan AI Agent is requesting access to your Joan account", select **Authorize**.

When you return to the assistant, the Joan tools are available. Try a request such as "Which meeting rooms are free at 2 PM today?"

> [!TIP]In a company account, an admin can add the connector once for the whole organization. Each employee then only does steps 7 and 8 to connect their own Joan account.

### Connect a custom company assistant

If your developers build your company assistant, they add the Joan MCP server like any other remote MCP server:

- Transport: Streamable HTTP, at `https://mcp.getjoan.com/mcp`
- Authorization: OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and dynamic client registration. The server publishes its metadata at `https://mcp.getjoan.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource`.
- Each user signs in with their own Joan account. Do not share one account between users.

## What you can do through the Joan MCP server

| Area | What the assistant can do |
| --- | --- |
| Rooms | Find rooms and their schedules, book, change and cancel room reservations, check in |
| Desks | Find desks and free time slots, book (also recurring), change and cancel desk reservations, check in and check out |
| Assets | Find assets and asset types, check availability, book assets |
| Visitors | Create, change and cancel visitor invitations, view visits, check visitors out, print a visitor badge |
| Workplace | Look up buildings, floors, departments, colleagues and amenities, and read announcements |

Admins can also manage some workplace data through the assistant, for example announcements, amenities, assets and desk settings, if their Joan role allows it.

Example requests:

- "Book a desk for me on the 2nd floor tomorrow from 9 AM to 5 PM."
- "Book me a desk every weekday until the end of the month."
- "Find a room for 6 people on Thursday at 10 AM and book it for one hour."
- "Invite a visitor for tomorrow at 11 AM."
- "Where is my colleague sitting today?"

## Permissions and security

- **The assistant acts as you.** It uses the Joan account that signed in. It can see and do only what that account can see and do in Joan. Your Joan role, your company booking rules and your department restrictions all apply.
- **Bookings for yourself use your own identity.** When you ask to book "for me", Joan takes your identity from the sign-in.
- **Company booking rules apply**, for example the reservation window, check-in rules and time slots that your admin set in Joan.
- **To stop access,** disconnect or remove the Joan connector in your AI assistant.

> [!NOTE]Your AI assistant processes your requests and the Joan data that it receives under the assistant provider's own terms. Check your provider's data processing terms before you connect.

## Things to keep in mind

- Set a time zone for each building in Joan. The assistant uses the building time zone to book at the correct time.
- A recurring desk reservation cannot be changed after it is made. You can only cancel it and book again.
- AI assistants can make mistakes. Check the booking details before you confirm, and check the result in Joan if something looks wrong.
